About Mr Derek
Hey there, little friends and parents! I am excited to be a life skills teacher at Legacy Elementary! I have taught many different skills to many different people over my years in industry. Before embarking on my second career, I was a researcher of plants, especially food crops, which means I have studied plants that grow yummy food for you and your family to enjoy. I have worked for the State of Texas and the United States Government. When I'm not working to help make young people all that they can be, I like to volunteer, play in my garden, read exciting books and research, and create colorful paintings. Let's have fun exploring the world together!

Incubating change
Remember, just like plants need time to grow and bloom, so do ideas and dreams! Embrace the fact it takes time for us to change, it is okay to take YOUR time! I promise to keep nurturing students’ passions, provide learning in unique ways, and will never doubt your child's ability to blossom into someone incredible. Every step we take brings us closer to the day where your child's brilliance will shine brightly for all the world to see!🌱🌞🌻
Empathy, always
Embrace empathy, dear reader. It's a superpower, making hearts bloom with kindness, healing, and understanding. We will spread LOVE and change our worlds here

Cut Flower Growing Guide
While working in the marketing department of the Texas Department of Agriculture I helped create a document to help average citizens understand how to grow cut flowers in Texas
What do plant breeders do?
A friend and I created this narrated video which won the NAPB national contest. I wrote the script and produced this video to help average consumers understand how their food is made better by scientists.
